Match Report: Seghill 31-22 Winlaton
Seghill pulled off a thrilling 31-22 victory over Winlaton in a game that kept spectators on edge until the very end.
The match started with Seghill on the front foot, as Glasper and Rowe crossed the try line early to give the away side a quick lead. However, Winlaton responded with a try and penalty to narrow the gap and went into halftime trailing by just six points at 14-8.
The second half saw Seghill come out with renewed energy. Woods crashed over the line to extend Seghill’s lead to 19-8. Soon after, Stewart added another try, pushing Seghill’s advantage to 24-8 and putting them firmly in control. But Winlaton’s fly-half had other ideas, displaying two moments of individual brilliance to bring the visitors back into contention at 24-22.
With just five minutes remaining and the game hanging in the balance, Seghill rallied. Archer, moved to the wing from his usual position at hooker, scored a crucial try at the death, widening the lead to 29-22. Woods M then sealed the game with a spectacular touchline conversion, denying Winlaton a losing bonus point and capping Seghill’s fourth win of the season at 31-22.
The game wasn’t without controversy. Ryan Wood received a surprising yellow card in what was described as one of the most puzzling decisions of the season. Wood attempted to move the referee—who was inadvertently blocking his line—by placing a polite hand around his waist to allow for a successful tackle. Despite video evidence suggesting it was not an aggressive act, the referee issued a yellow card for “hands on the ref,” leaving Seghill’s coaching staff in disbelief.
Nevertheless, Seghill emerged victorious in a hard-fought, exhilarating game, showing grit and resilience to secure a well-deserved win.
